The conference "Ukraine at the start of the 21st century" was hosted by Political Science and Ukrainian Philology students from Warsaw University. Experts from Chornobyl Rerovery and Development Programme Mr. Pavlo Zamostyan and his colleague International UNV volunteer from Poland Mr. Mieczyslaw Lapanowski were invited speakers at the conference.

Mr. Lapanowski spoke at length about the role of International UNV volunteers in programmes assisting people suffering from large-scale catastrophes around the world. The students were especially interested in the topic of - "Chornobyl: 21 years after the catastrophe, myths and actual threats".

The conference was held shortly before the 21st anniversary of the Chornobyl accident in Warsaw, Poland. As a result of the conference, a group of student volunteers will travel to Ukraine in May 2007, and will establish a new cooperation with Ukrainian youth.

I was thrilled to see another Lapanowski was providing opportunities for the young people of the Ukraine. For my father and I was also educators here in America. Please contact me Mr. Lapanowski with your e-mail so my family can learn about our distant relatives and our homeland. My father did make a family tree before he passed a few years ago. It would be great to add to the family tree. Thank you and I can't wait to answer any questions about us the Lapanowski's in Michigan. Sincerely Craig Lapanowski
