UNV Lecture in High school
by Giovanni Mozzarelli

26 October 2009

On the 23rd of October, to celebrate the 64th anniversary of the United Nations, several representatives of the UN system in Ukraine gave lectures in public educational institutes. Giovanni Mozzarelli, on behalf of UN Volunteers Ukraine, gave a presentation to the students of Kyiv English School #155 on “Volunteerism and the UNV Programme: Tasks and Challenges”.

40 students in the 11th and 12th grades were introduced, through an interactive lecture, to the principles of volunteerism and the work of UNV volunteers all over the world. The presentation also gave students a chance to think about what volunteering really is and what it means for them in their daily lives. Students were particularly interested in the role played by UNV volunteers in disaster-affected situations, like the post-tsunami situation in Thailand and the election monitoring mission in Timor Leste.

A small space was also dedicated to the promotion of the Online Volunteering tool and to the upcoming International Volunteer Day.
