My Definition of Volunteerism
by Katerina Zezulkova
13 February 2008 I have a passion for transportation and everything related to its facilities. My move from the vineyard area of South Moravia to the capital of the Czech Republic a year ago was helped by the fact that indeed in Prague I will not drink such good wine, but there will be a metro for daily use! There are so many thoughts that go through my mind in places like this. Similarly, I like walking down big airport halls, listening to the sound of different languages, observing people and trying to guess where they all might go, for how long, why, with whom, will they like it there or not? This must be somehow linked to a more sophisticated interest of mine - migration issues. “Most of us travel because we like to do that. Some of us because they have to” was a title of one exhibition that took place a year ago in Czech Republic. I do not want to enlarge the package of heartbreaking stories I have heard, read or seen by spending my time with refugees, asylum seekers or guest workers so far, nor to join the controversial “Schengen discussion” and the possible impact for Ukrainians, for instance. After my arrival in Ukraine, I missed the ethnic diversity which I got used to in the last years. And then I discovered Rokada Integration Center – the only non-governmental organisation providing social service for asylum seekers and refugees in Kiev and Kiev region – which I joined in December 2007. To be in contact with different cultures through the people there, to share their customs, to hear (not always complaints and sad stories), to feel their progress in settling down in a new society – all that makes me simply feel good. If my few skills, knowledge or experience can contribute to their wellbeing, wow - we moved forward! Since the very beginning they gave me a signal that I was always welcome there. And they continue doing so by involving me in their ad-hoc activities, e.g. preparing costumes for the Christmas performance presented by refugee children. I like to sit in the big, kindly messy room, where all the beautiful hand-made earrings, bracelets, dresses and bags are born; to drink tea and listen to the mix of languages I don’t understand a single word from. Even the grant proposal, which kept me busy during January, was more enjoyable in this environment. Due to the cultural and religious diversity it seems like an ongoing celebration is taking place and they will not accept a rejection for the invitation to join. I can not agree with the general vision that a volunteer is the one that (just) gives - time, energy, skills, etc. So far I have the feeling I am the one who has mainly gained. |
